Does music soothe you? Chances are it does and similarly it will soothe your baby. There are certain distinct sounds that have been proven to calm even fussy babies: the sounds of nature, white noise, and music. Even if your baby isn't fussy such sounds can be played in the background to encourage a feeling of peacefulness. All it takes is s few minutes every day and before you know it, your baby will be looking forward to hearing that certain song coming from the CD player. In fact if you make the stereo the main attraction over the TV, that is something that will reap huge benefits in the future.
There is nothing magical, mysterious or complicated about introducing your baby to music from day one. Some parents even do so even while the baby is in utero. There is no perfect song or type of music. Just put on the music you enjoy and let the baby enjoy it with you. What you listen to isn't that important (within reason - rap or heavy metal would not be a good idea). Your baby's mood is going to be altered by any musical sound that she hears.
Besides your favorite music, there are hundreds of CDs of baby songs and lullabies you get and play. Those might be good choices to play at the end of the day or nap time. They have a slow, soothing beat and are made specifically to calm a baby. There are so many choices it can be overwhelming. Just pick a couple and play them over and over until you get tired of them and want to replace them with something else.
Here are some of the benefits that are associated with introducing your baby to music:
- It enhances her behavior and cognitive skills.
- It reduces stress for the whole family
- It will promote an interest in music that will last a lifetime.
You may find that your baby seems to react positively when a particular song or artist is playing - this is very common and it can be used to soothe your baby in those times when she seems restless and irritable.
